Black Bass: The Ultimate Tackle Tester ⛓️

Senses Pro Angler Alip Aldam goes head-to-head with the undisputed king of the river: the Papuan Black Bass. Known as one of the hardest-pulling freshwater fish on the planet, the Black Bass doesn't just bite—it tries to destroy everything in its path. To survive the initial "hit," Alip relies on the Senses Counterblow V3, a rod built with the raw torque required to stop a freight train in its tracks. With the Senses Mojiko line providing a rock-solid connection, there is no room for error when this dark-scaled monster decides to run for the snags.

The technique is all about the "Heavy Cover Extraction." Alip casts deep into the heart of submerged timber, where the Black Bass lies in wait. The Senses Mojiko line’s incredible abrasion resistance is tested to the limit as it rubs against jagged wood, while the Counterblow V3 rod stays loaded, absorbing the brutal, bone-jarring headshakes. This isn't just fishing; it’s a high-stakes wrestling match in the murky depths. Only the toughest gear survives the "Black Bass Tax," and Senses is built to pay it in full. 🎣💥

The Papuan Black Bass (Lutjanus goldiei)

Often called the "world's hardest fighting fish," this species is much rarer and more localized than the Mangrove Jack.

Physical Details:

 • Color: Much darker than the Jack—usually charcoal, chocolate brown, or dull black. They lack the warm copper/red tones of the MJ.

• Identify: They have a deeper, "bulkier" body profile and massive canine teeth. Their scales are often larger and coarser in appearance.

• Strength: Pound-for-pound, they are significantly more powerful than the MJ, often snapping heavy-duty rods.

Habitat:

 • Jungle Rivers: Unlike the Jack, which loves the coast, the Black Bass is a true river specialist. They are found in deep, fast-flowing jungle rivers and freshwater reaches, often hundreds of miles inland from the sea.

• Location: Their range is restricted. While Jacks are found everywhere from Africa to Australia, the Black Bass is found almost exclusively in Papua New Guinea, West Papua, and very specific parts of Sabah, Borneo (where they are called Kanai).

• Ambush Points: They live in "black water" or tea-colored rivers, hiding in deep holes under massive fallen trees or rock bars.

Mangrove Jack (Lutjanus argentimaculatus)

To catch a Black Bass, you have to be prepared for a "street fight" under the water. These fish don't just bite; they try to drag you into the nearest pile of sharp rocks or tangled roots to snap your line.

Here are the professional tips and techniques used by anglers like Alip Aldam to master these predators.

1. The Strategy: "Hit and Hold"

The most important rule for Black Bass and Jacks is never give them an inch.

• The Hook-Set: When you feel that heavy "thump," do not just reel. You must strike upward violently with the rod to bury the hook.

• The First 3 Seconds: This is when the fight is won or lost. You must use the power of the Counterblow V3 to "turn the head" of the fish away from the snags immediately. If the fish gets its head down and reaches the roots, it’s game over.

• Drag Setting: Your reel drag should be set to "maximum" or "lock." You want the fish to feel the full weight of the rod’s backbone from the start.

2. The Technique: Pinpoint Casting

These fish are ambush predators; they won't chase a lure across the river. You have to put the lure right in their "living room."

• Tight to Cover: Cast your lure as close to the mangrove roots or fallen logs as possible. Professionals like Alip Aldam often aim for the "shadows" under overhanging branches.

• Retrieval: Use a "Start-Stop" retrieve. Twitch the lure twice, then let it pause for a second. Many strikes happen exactly when the lure stops moving, as the fish thinks the "prey" is stunned.

• Vibration: In murky jungle water, use lures with loud internal rattles (like the Senses Kaido Shad) or high-vibration lures so the fish can find them using their lateral lines.

3. The Place: Where to Find Them

• Structures: Look for "snag piles," submerged timber, rock bars, and bridge pylons.

• The "Eddy": Look for areas where the current hits a log or rock and creates a small pocket of still water. This is where a Black Bass will sit to wait for food to float by.

• Tide/Time: Low tide is often best for lure casting because the fish are forced out of the thickest mangroves and into the main river channel where you can reach them.

📍 Recommended Place: Sri Ganda, Sabah, Borneo

While Mangrove Jacks are everywhere in West Malaysia, the true Papuan Black Bass is a specialty of Sabah.

• The Spot: Sungai Gajah (Elephant River) in the Sri Ganda region.

• Why here? This is one of the few places in Malaysia where the water chemistry and habitat perfectly support the Lutjanus goldiei. The river is lined with ancient Nypa palms and deep, submerged "log jams" that provide the perfect fortress for trophy-sized Bass.

• Best Time: March to August is the peak season when the water levels are stable, and the "Giants" are most active.

🎣 The recommended "Jungle Extraction" Setup

• Rod: Senses Imperial Jade (Ironman Expedition)

A high-performance 4-piece travel rod with extreme lifting power. It is stiffer than the Counterblow, allowing you to "winch" a massive Bass out of a log jam before it can react.

• Main Braid: Senses Mojiko (PE 60lb) – To provide the distance and strength behind the wire.

• Leader Connection: Senses Mackerel Special 7X7 Wire Assist – Used as a 12-18 inch "shock leader" to prevent bite-offs from sharp teeth.

• Leader: Senses Absorber 100% Fluorocarbon (70lb - 80lb)

Black Bass have huge teeth and live in abrasive environments. This leader is virtually invisible underwater but has a hard outer coating to resist being cut by sharp wood or barnacles.

• Lure: Senses Spy Mission 125SWR (Sinking)

A heavy-profile lure that casts deep into the "strike zone." Its internal weight system allows it to stay stable even in fast river currents where Black Bass wait for prey.

• Hooks: Senses Komodo VX4 (Treble Hooks)

The ultimate insurance policy. These 4X-strength hooks are forged for high-tensile resistance; they won't straighten or "open" even when subjected to the extreme jaw pressure of a 10kg+ Bass or the heavy drag settings required for jungle fishing.

Bumblebee / John's Snapper

The Fish: Bumblebee (John's Snapper)

• Scientific Name: Lutjanus johnii

• The "Bumblebee" Name: This nickname is local to Southeast Asian anglers. It refers to the bright golden-bronze body paired with the single black spot on its back, which looks like a bee’s markings or a "sting" mark.

• Power & Behavior: They are known as "dirty fighters." Once hooked, a Bumblebee will immediately try to dive into the nearest structure—whether it's mangrove roots, a rock pile, or a wreck—to snap your line.

• Growth: They grow slowly, making large ones (over 5kg) very respected catches. They can eventually grow up to 10kg+ in offshore waters.

• Eating Quality: It is widely considered one of the best-tasting fish in the snapper family. The meat is white, firm, and flaky, perfect for Teochew-style steaming or Curry Fish Head.

The Habitat: The "Bumblebee" snapper (John's Snapper) lives in two main areas depending on its age:

• Juveniles (Smaller ones): Found in mangrove estuaries, river mouths, and brackish water. They hide among mangrove roots and silty, turbid areas.

• Adults (Larger ones): Found in offshore coral reefs, rocky bottoms, and deep-sea structures (up to 80m deep).

Best Hotspots in Malaysia:

Matang Mangrove Estuary (Perak): A primary nursery ground for young Bumblebees.

• Merbok River (Kedah): Another major brackish river where they are common.

• East Coast Peninsular: Coastal areas around Kuala Rompin and East Johor have artificial reefs where larger adults gather.

• Sabah: Heavily found in the Sulu Sea and river systems in East Malaysia.

To consistently catch the "Bumblebee" (John’s Snapper) and the others in your photos, you need to master the tide and your bait presentation.

1. Best Techniques

• The "Dirty Fight": As soon as a Bumblebee hits, lock your drag. They are famous for "stone-washing"—diving straight into mangrove roots to snap your line.

• Running Sinker Rig: Use a small egg sinker that slides on your main line, a swivel, and a 50–80cm leader. This lets the fish pick up the bait without feeling the weight of the lead.

• Light Leaders: Bumblebees are very "shy." Use the thinnest Fluorocarbon leader you can get away with (usually 20–40lb) to make your line invisible in the water.

2. Best Bait & Lures

• Live Bait: This is king. Use Live Shrimp or small Mullet. Hook the shrimp through the tail or the head (avoiding the brain) so it stays alive and kicks.

• Dead Bait: Fresh Squid or Threadfin Herring strips work well. Keep the bait slim and tapered so it looks natural in the current.

• Lures: Small Deep-Diving Crankbaits (gold or silver) or Soft Plastic Grubs on a 1/8oz jig head.

3. Place & Timing

• The "Spot": Look for deep holes near mangrove bends, bridge pilings, or fallen trees.

• The Tide: The Incoming Tide is best. As the water rises, it pushes baitfish into the mangroves, and the Bumblebees follow them to feed.

• The Light: They feed most aggressively at dawn and dusk (low light) or on overcast days.
